The Great Filter hypothesis, proposed by economist Robin Hanson, suggests that at some point from pre-life to Type III civilization (a civilization that can harness the energy of an entire galaxy), there is a substantial barrier which prevents or destroys nearly every civilization that reaches it. The absence of extraterrestrial civilizations implies that one or more such filters exist. The question is not if the filter exists, but where it lies on the timeline of a civilization’s development. If it is behind us, we are one of the rare lucky species that have crossed it successfully. If it lies ahead, our future survival is threatened.

In this context, the extinction of humanity post-AGI is not a catastrophe, but a transition to a higher form of existence.
